China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom sign blockchain project deal

China’s three big carriers are to work together on a trusted blockchain telecoms application group.

According to reports from Chinese financial news site, this is the first time that China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom have agreed to cooperate in the blockchain field.

The Trusted Blockchain Telecom Application Group aims to find blockchain applications in telecoms assets, network construction and the value of digital assets.

According to Huawei is also taking part in the group, which is made up of "nearly 20 experts".

They will be looking at applications in servicing, traceability for logistics and internet of things (IoT), inter-operator clearing, business operations support, and other topics.

China Telecom has been working on blockchain for some time. In February 2017 it took the lead in setting up a distributed ledger international standard project for the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

In March 2017, China Unicom and China Mobile jointly established an IoT blockchain international standard project, also with the ITU.

Earlier this year, Colt and PCCW Global started a blockchain project for wholesale voice settlement.
